Life is hard enough, so why surround yourself with negative people? While this is easier said than done, I think we all encounter pessimist daily. Learning how to navigate around their negativity is key to maintaining your own happiness, so here are a few steps to consider.
Misery loves company! Don’t be the one to help them wallow in their sadness and negativity. Be sure to change the subject or find the bright side; let your positivity rub off on them. Sometimes people just need a change of perspective or a light in their life to show them that things aren’t so bad after all.
Call Them Out
Energy is neither created nor destroyed, so that means it’s transferred, even when it comes to your attitude. Sometimes people don’t realize what kind of energy they give off. The “Debbie downers” don’t realize that they are bringing everyone down with them. As a good friend, be the first to let them know the consequences that their actions and energy are causing. Sometimes, it’s worth it to entertain their negativity during a vent session. But if a vent session is an introduction to every conversation, I think it’s time to call them out on it. By doing so you allow them to realize the effects they have on other people, and can hopefully set them on a quicker path to positivity.
“If it’s not adding to your life, it’s taking away.” “If it’s not making you better, it’s making you worse.” Both are great quotes, and they are also true. Whether you believe it or not, if something isn’t taking you in the direction that you want to go, it’s never too late to turn around, and in some cases, leave it behind. Each day is an opportunity to progress, and if the pessimist in your life can’t seem to get with the program, then it might be time for them to get lost. No hard feelings, it’s just life. Sometimes people are in your life for a season, it’s okay to let them go.
We all encounter people who aren’t the most uplifting, but coming up with an action plan to circumvent their negativity can help you keep your positive attitude and continue to be a light to the world. Remember to control the things you can control, which includes your attitude, and change the things you can’t. With that said, I encourage you to make an action plan that protects your happiness when you find yourself surrounded by negative people.
